Your Good Boy Can Be an Eco-Friendly Good Boy

Dogs and cats are the best and I just can’t get enough of them. For months, my Facebook feed has been chock full of posts from every cat and dog-oriented page you could possibly dream up. It’s been a great way to pretend that the world isn’t burning down around us! There’s no better coping strategy for 2017 than spending quality time with a furry pal.

Of course, that’s until you remember how crappy your pets can be for the environment—and not just because they dig up your yard. You can’t avoid the fact that—between the brain parasites in their poop and the way they try to kill every bird they see—cats are an ecological disaster.

We also feed our pets a shit-ton of meat; so much so that if the dogs and cats of the United States decided to form their own country, it’d be the fifth largest consumer of meat on Earth. Our furry pals have a terrible carbon pawprint.

Thankfully, you don’t need to swear off cats and dogs to show your dedication to saving the planet, although spaying and neutering your pets is a great place to start. There are a ton of things you can do to care for your pets and the planet at the same time, and we’re here to show you how.

I have to say these Friday videos are excellent. Chockablock full of hard data like information and entertaining. Of course, I agree with making conservation everyday and simple.

Skip the rest of my comment, it’s Friday story time. A grad school buddy was from China and in the party. This was just after Tiananmen square by a month. His office in the petroleum ministry was on the square. Superfluous detail, but what the fuck. Anyway, I had a cookout for the department at my house. He was aghast by the fact I had two dogs as pets. Apparently in China prior to the capitalism push starting in the 1990s, pets were considered western and bourgeois. No good communist would have a dog or cat or be called bourgeois. Christ, I didn’t even want one of the dogs, my mother-in-law made me take it. Dumb dogs.

So think of the problem not just an American one at 320 million folks free to have pets should they desire to - but one with also about 1.4 billion Chinese now wanting one or two, just like us American capitalist pigs do.
